As battle begins for ministerial slots, who will be part of Buhari’s cabinet?

Published

There exists a palpable level of anxiety in the camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with regards to those who will make President Buhari’s second term cabinet.

Leaders of the ruling party have engaged in endless closed-door meetings to deliberate on who will make the list.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has been quiet over ministerial nominees as he kept his card to his chest. His silence has therefore raised the level of anxiety of the people and thus there is a high level of expectations and fears amongst hopefuls.

With presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina confirming that Buhari will soon announce his nominees, the battle for ministerial appointments has peaked significantly in the last few weeks.

Recall that Nigerinews reported that Buhari may end up retaining most of the members in his first time owing by the valedictory speech he delivered lauding their effort in serving their fatherland.

The President is said to be preparing a final list of those he wants in his cabinet due for announcement anytime soon.

ThisDay reports that the battle has been made particularly competitive, because of former ministers, who are itching to return to cabinet, former governors who have either completed their two terms in office or those who lost re-election bid or lost the ticket.

Others are candidates and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who feel a need to be compensated for their roles in the victory of the president in the just concluded 2019 presidential election which earned him a second term.

According to a reliable source in the presidency, what will happen this time around will be different from 2015. The source further revealed that apart from selecting candidates each from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the president has also decided to appoint another six to represent each of the geopolitical zones in order to actualise his promise of an inclusive government.

The governors had last week said the ministerial appointment is the prerogative of the president and has kept the information about his cabinet to himself alone.

For this reason, the president has given no clue on who might get what has further stiffened the jostle for appointments.

President Buhari has to choose between former Lagos governors, Babatunde Raji Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode.

It was gathered that while Fashola, who was a minister of power, works and housing may return representing the Lagos slot, while Ambode is being considered for the south-west slot.

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi is believed to be confident in maintaining his seat, but there have been insinuations by those who feel the governorship candidate of the party, Tonye Cole, who was denied the opportunity of challenging Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by different courts, is also being considered for a ministerial appointment.

Former minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu and the president’s campaign’s spokesperson for the 2019 election, Festus Keyamo, SAN may struggle for Delta state slot while the choice of candidate is Wale Edun, Pastor Tunde Bakare and one Mr. Kayode Odesola may decide who represents Ogun state.

Former Oyo governor, Abiola Ajimobi who lost his bid to return to the Senate will have to fight for the Oyo state slot with Adebayo Adelabu, who is said to be eyeing ministry of finance. And further compounding this is the fact that the former minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu is also in contention for the slot from the state.

Former minister of Information, Lai Mohammed is believed to be a top cabinet member may miss out on the Kwara slot as he reportedly does not appear to have the much-needed support from home, as a majority of the people feel, the opportunity should go to other parts of the state for balancing.

Former Benue Governor George Akume, who also lost out in the senatorial elections and the immediate past minister of agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh are the two candidates for the Benue slot. Both are qualified and worked for Buhari’s re-election.

The Kano slot appeared to be decided with former minister of interior, Abdulrahman Danbazau, except the president changes his mind, which many believe is unlikely.

For his home state, Katsina, the president have to decide whom to choose between a former minister of state for aviation, Hadi Sirika and Senator Abu Ibrahim with many believing Sirika will be favoured ahead of Abu due to his performance in the first term.

In Kaduna state, there is an interesting twist with the name of Senator Shehu Sani, who fell out with Governor Nasir el-Rufai ahead of the 2019 election has been flying around, but Barnabas Bala Bantex, the immediate past deputy governor has also come up strong in the equation.

Ebonyi state slot will be decided between APC’s 2019 governorship candidate, Senator Sunny Ogbuorji and the immediate past minister of science and technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, who some people have rooted for the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Former Bauchi governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar and former minister of education, Adamu Adamu, one of the closest allies of the president who will slug it out for the sole ticket of the state.

In Cross River state, former minister of Niger Delta, Usaini Usani and governorship candidate of the APC in the state Cross River, Senator John Enoh, had since taken their rivalry to the ministerial bout, after the fierce battle over who was the authentic governorship candidate of the party in the state.

Former Akwa Ibom governor, Godswill Akpabio, could join the likes of Nsima Ekere and Udo Udoma are to battle for the Akwa Ibom slot.

, Abubakar Malami being the sole candidate of Kebbi state could return to the cabinet but there is the belief that President Buhari might drop the former minister of justice and attorney-general of the federation.

The battle for Sokoto slot, the battle is currently being described as one between Aisha Abubakar, former minister of state for trade and investment and the APC candidate in the just concluded governorship election, Ahmed Aliyu.

Former Adamawa state governor, Mohammad Bindow Jibrilla could emerge representative of the state having lost his election in March this year. while Fatima Gambo from Taraba, is said to being positioned as the ideal replacement for Aisha Al-Hassan, the former minister of women affairs.

Reactions have continued to pour in over the refusal of Big Brother Naija Housemate, Seyi Awolowo not using his veto card after being nominated for eviction in the reality show.

Seyi, the grandson of Obafemi Awolowo shocked the housemates over the decision.

Khafi, who expressed her shock over the decision said she voted Seyi knowing fully well that he has the opportunity to save himself.

“I was very shocked. I don’t think anybody was expecting that. I was even more shocked by that was part of the reason I nominated him because I felt he could save himself.

“I really think he is going to down in Big Brother history. Some people said maybe it’s a strategy, but he is really up for eviction. But if it’s a strategy, then it’s a very risky strategy.

“I saw him, when he had twenty seconds to decide, I saw him taking a deep breath and he was just shocked. He was just looking around and he looked at me and I look at myself like please don’t pick me and he just return the coin like I return the power and everybody’s face was like wow. Everybody was shocked like what has he just done.

“And I think a lot of people respect him for it. I do respect him for that like he could have put anybody under the bus like I am grateful he didn’t.”

Seyi has therefore been banned by Big Brother from participating in the veto power game of chance.

Watch the reactions of other housemates in the video below.

Ministerial List: Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Reveals Why Buhari Is Yet To Release the List

Published

Orji uzor Kalu

Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip, has ensured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari has worked hard to guarantee that the ministerial list arrives at the Senate house on time.

He indicated this after meeting with Buhari over the weekend after the National Assembly leadership.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the ex governor of Abia State said after the conference, the management of the National Assembly was persuaded that Buhari is working around the clock to get the list of ministerial appointees to the Senate on time.

He said Buhari explained to them that, before sending the ministerial list to the Legislature for review and validation, he required wider scrutiny.

Kalu said:

“President Buhari is making all efforts to get the ministerial list to the National Assembly. At least, I was in the room at the meeting.

“It is not good to misquote the president. I am sure that the list would be ready very soon. Sooner than you people think.

“The president said that he is making a wider consultation and that in the last tenure, he was just handed over the list by party people to appoint.

“He said that he is making a background check on everyone of them to make sure they are people he can work with.”
