The biggest Big Brother Naija, #BBN, news over the last few days was the fact that Tacha, the housemate that must he making male of all ages drool with desire, doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘characteristics’. Now the pitchforks are out demanding that she be impaled: in the world of #BBN, that translates to, it’s high she got evicted for the crime of being mute.
That is really surprising. Since when did ‘smart’ or ‘clever’ (apart from street smarts) become a requirement to win a show like #BBN? Come on, a couple of years back, Efe won it by constantly using, ‘Based on logistics’ during the show. Many Nigerians (read that as fans of the show) latched on to that like it was the Holy Grail.
The last time I watched the show was the second week it aired. I wanted to see who this Tacha was and what the fuss around her was all about.
It didn’t take more than two minutes before I got bored.
Some dudes and a lady were sitting or lying on different beds in a room with so many beds. I guess that is the common bedroom. They were discussing some random stuff and trying their best to look like they are unaware of the ‘hidden’ cameras.
I didn’t know what Tacha looked like but the producers were thoughtful enough to have each contestant wear an identification tag or belt. Okay, the girl talking in this group can’t be Tacha, she didn’t look the part.
Five minutes later, as I was about to switch to a different channel (this borefest made watching paint dry an adrenaline-pumping endeavor), the producers switched to another group sitting around a table. There were five of them; 3 dudes and a girl listening to the second girl of the group like students hanging on the words of a supervisor laying down the rules of that final crucial examination before graduation.
Long story short, the girl holding court was Tacha. And she was in the middle of a long narrative about how she made it past the rowdy audition.
She was pretty alright; in that way that experienced men instantly recognize you’ll need to spend tons of money to get the privilege of fraternizing with her one-on-one.
I looked at the people listening to her. The dominant thought on my mind was: I’d listen to a dog bark for several weeks non-stop if I get to win ₦60 million at the end of the ordeal.
So that was my first glimpse of Tacha; dominating a group of youths who were supposed to be in a fair race with her to win 60 million naira. She would win any day because compared to the others I saw that day, she knows how to put on a good show.
And put on an awesome show she did when the host, Ebuka, demanded to know her opinion on the three characteristics of a Big Brother Naija winner.
‘Tacha.Tacha. Tacha.’ was her answer.
I had to give her credit when I read about it. That wasn’t the kind of answer I expected from somebody like that. If nothing else, the answer showed she is a witty, comfortable in her skin and knows how to manipulate the English language to serve her.
Writers do that a lot: I mean using words unconventionally. Most times, people take it too literally and spectacularly miss the point.
This is mostly down to a prevailing malaise afflicting the public as far as the use of English goes. It precludes the manipulation of words to create the right effect.
The flak Tacha is getting once again exposed the watching public’s mundane relationship with Nigeria’s lingua franca. English language, like all languages, is very flexible and allows speakers to use words to say one thing in a million different ways.
That is what makes some people consummate storytellers. Their ability to make something common, something you have heard a hundred times before, sound fresh and new is always exhilarating.
In an informal setting like Tacha’s #BBN interview with Ebuka, she was under no obligation to give a rote, uninspired answer to a very clichéd question like, ‘What are the three characteristics of a #BBN winner?’
Her answer implied she is the essence and embodiment of a reality TV show winner:
Characteristic 1,’Look no further than Tacha.’
2, ‘The #BBN crown was made for Tacha’s.’ and
3, ‘Tacha is the quintessential reality TV star.’
In other words, Tacha, Tacha, Tacha. Is that too hard to comprehend?
